v1.9.0
October 2026Drafting Papers & a Compact Toolbar
Screen Annotations 1.9.0 puts your whiteboard on drafting paper and gives the Mac a toolbar that gets out of the way. Choose Blueprint or Whiteprint paper, add grain to any board, and flip between papers with one key while your ink follows. On the Mac, the whole toolbar can fold into a single bubble you drag anywhere.
Papers and Grain
- Blueprint and Whiteprint — Board → Paper: None, Blueprint (white ink on blue), or Whiteprint (blue ink on cream). Each paper draws its grid in its own ink, with a heavier line every fifth square
- Grain on any board — a fine paper texture with soft edge shading, on any background color, saved with each board and left out of exports
- Flip with one key — press
B, or Flip in the Board menu, to switch between Blueprint and Whiteprint - On iPad, too — the same papers and grain in the bubble's Board card and in Board Settings, and boards keep their paper as they sync
Ink That Follows the Board
- Your ink flips with the paper — black, white, and ink strokes draw in the board's ink, so white writing on Blueprint turns navy on Whiteprint
- Always readable — colors that would be hard to read get lighter or darker, and text on a filled shape is judged against that shape
- Nothing changes underneath — stored colors stay as you drew them, so flipping back restores the board exactly
- A toolbar that matches — the toolbar turns light on light boards and stays dark on dark ones
Compact Toolbar on Mac
- Fold the toolbar into one bubble — with the Compact button,
⌥⌘T, or Compact Toolbar in the Full Screen / Window menu - A ring of tools — click the bubble for Draw, Shapes, Style, Edit, View, and Board, each opening a card; right-click for a menu of tools
- Drag it anywhere — the bubble shows your current tool and color and stays inside your board
- Make it yours — Settings → Annotate → Compact Toolbar: start compact, choose the ring's bubbles, show labels, and reset its position
For AI Assistants (MCP)
set_backgroundtakespaper(blueprint, whiteprint, none) andgrain- New
set_toolbarfolds or unfolds the toolbar and opens the ring or a card - The
blueprintdiagram theme now draws on Blueprint paper in one ink, with amber for emphasis
Fixes
- The toolbar no longer gets clipped in narrower board windows; whatever doesn't fit moves into Show More
- Windowed whiteboards resize from their bottom corners again
Requirements
- macOS 15 or later on Mac; iPadOS 18 or later on iPad
- Paper and grain sync between Mac and iPad on 1.9.0; older versions show the same background color without the grain
